The Ndutu plains are sweeping grasslands dotted with lakes, trees and stunning kopjes located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, on the outskirts of the Southern Serengeti plains.
Famous also for its annual wildebeest migration passing through it during the months of December to March means you’re in the midst of a calving season for migratory wild animals. Following the short rains in December, the area becomes lush with fresh grass and watering holes are rejuvenated.
While the Ndutu plains are at their best for wildlife viewing from December to March, the area is home to a variety of wildlife that can be seen year-round. Some of the resident animals include: Elephants, Lions, Cheetahs, Leopards, Hyenas, Giraffes, Impala, Dik-dik, Bat-eared foxes, Genets, Jackals, Wildcats and other smaller herbivores as well.
In addition to these mammals, the area is also rich in birdlife, with species like the Fischer’s lovebird and various raptors
Ndutu is an excellent game viewing area throughout the year but due to the seasonal rains, massive herds of wildebeest and zebra can be seen all over these plains from end of December, when the Great Migration herds begin to arrive from the north, until March.
Game Drive
Traversing through the open plains watching wildebeest calving is an incredible experience as approximately 8,000 calves are born within Ndutu during the calving season. The abundant vulnerable youngsters attract predators such as Lions, Hyenas and Cheetahs to prey on them, as they take advantage of the plentiful herbivores on the plains.
As you float over the open grassland filled with a variety of wildlife is quite a unique experience as you take on an aerial view of this beautiful place to ensure that you don’t miss a thing.
A great experience to get upclose with raw, untouched nature as you follow trails in the wild, noticing animal tracks, bones, and identifying them, can be quite thrilling and a walking safari allows exactly those things.
