Lake Natron

Lake Natron

Certainly a journey to include in your itinerary! This beautiful shallow lake located in the East African Rift Valley lies at the foothills of Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano. The lake is around 58km long when full and 22km wide.

The high alkalinity of the lake provides a breeding ground for blue algae that around 2 million lesser flamingos depend on for breeding during the months of June-October.

Key Features and Ecosystems

Highly Alkaline Waters

Lake Natron is an alkaline or soda lake with a high concentration of sodium carbonate, giving it a pH between 9 and 10.5.

Water temperatures can reach up to 60°C (140°F), making it one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

The lake’s red and pink hues come from microorganisms, such as Spirulina, which thrive in its saline waters.

Salt Crust and Islands

The surface of the lake is often encrusted with salt, which creates otherworldly formations and supports microbial life.

Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano

Located near the lake, Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in Maasai, is an active stratovolcano known for its unique carbonatite lava.

Wetlands and River Inflows

The Ewaso Ng’iro River feeds the lake and sustains the surrounding wetlands, which provide critical habitat for wildlife.

Wildlife

While Lake Natron may seem inhospitable, it supports a surprising diversity of life:

Flamingos

  • Lesser Flamingos: Lake Natron is the primary breeding site for lesser flamingos in East Africa, hosting up to 75% of the global population.
  • The lake’s saline environment supports the growth of Spirulina, a blue-green algae that flamingos feed on.
  • Shallow, isolated conditions provide a safe nesting ground, protecting chicks from predators.

Other Birds

  • Over 400 bird species have been recorded in the area, including pelicans, egrets, and herons.
  • Migratory species use the lake as a stopover point.

Fish

  • Few species can survive in the lake, but some extremophile fish, like the Alcolapia species, have adapted to the saline environment.

Mammals and Reptiles

  • Surrounding areas host animals like zebras, giraffes, and antelopes, as well as predators like lions and hyenas.
  • Nile crocodiles can be found in nearby wetlands.

More of Natron

The deep red colors of the lake results from cyanobacteria that also emerges from lake’s high salinity.  This creates a harsh environment in and around the lake that only wildlife that can survive dry conditions such as ostriches, oryxs and kudus tend to be spotted.
